In March of 2014, I abruptly resigned from the church I had planted in my living room and pastored for twenty years. It was based in a leading from the Holy Spirit in which He spoke to Liz and me seven times over a five-month period, “the road less traveled.” It was while I was on a prayer hike in the southern California wilderness state park, Joshua Tree, that we sensed God was leading us to make a change.
The Mountain Springs Church had grown well into the thousands and we had two campuses yet, I was dissatisfied, anxious and tired of the politics that I had allowed to grow up around me. It was bittersweet.
For the next 40 nights we prayed and sought God. It was during this time that He spoke to us from Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell in the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up…I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
The little band of men and women who had prayed and come with us all agreed that God was up to something that we could not even imagine. I began to prayer walk daily and for the next four years, rarely missed a day of covering the Black Forest with my footprints. A vision and new work of God was birthed.
The Road was planted in May, 2014, leading to a merger two years later with another church. We have been blessed with a beautiful congregation of wholehearted disciples, a fantastic ministry center and a growing, energetic and powerful staff team. Almost simultaneously, Worshiper & Warrior was birthed; we have now done four men’s retreats in Colorado and leave on Tuesday for Wholeheart Advance: Georgia! My book, Worshipper Warrior: a 21-day Journey into the Dangerous Life of David, came out in the fall of 2018. God has given us a vision for a “Kingdom of God Revolution in the Rockies” and we now have almost every hour, out of 168, covered with one-hour prayer warriors, crying out for a revolution! What an adventure!
See, I am doing a new thing! I believe it.
